Rabbi Steven Burg: Attacking prayer reveals a deep societal crisis that must be fixed
Rabbi Steven Burg, CEO of Aish, has written a powerful piece in JNS about why we need prayer.
Too many commentators sneered contemptuously at the concept of prayer in the wake of the monstrous shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis last month. This has become a recurring pattern, and liberal snobbery toward “flyover country” and people of faith has only grown over the years.
Rabbi Burg’s piece is a meditation on the importance of prayer. By all rights it should be at the center of our country, not a source of mockery. When one mocks prayer, Rabbi Burg writes, one is “rejecting the very foundation of moral society itself and the bedrock that the United States was founded upon…When we pray, we don’t retreat from action; we prepare ourselves for divinely inspired action. We align ourselves with a moral purpose that transcends political calculation.”
